Polymita picta

The header image shows just two morphs of this tree-living species confined to low forests of eastern Cuba.  The yellow and brown ground colours are reminiscent of those of the European Cepaea and imply that similar selective mechanisms must be maintaining the polymorphisms in these distantly related snails (Polymita is in the family Helminthoglyptidae, Cepaea is in the Helicidae) .   This apparent convergence in shell polymorphism was the subject of a field trip to the area near Baracoa, a collaboration between John Allen (University of Southampton, UK) , Bernardo Reyes-Tur (Universidad de Oriente, Santiago de Cuba) and Norvis Hernández Hernández (Parque Nacional Alejandro de Humboldt).  Here is Bernardo talking about his favourite animals!
